Hyper connected or disconnected? Technology is here to stay.

Jun 07, 2023

I couldn't help but see the new AR headset announcement that Apple made recently, I was scrolling through instagram, convincing myself that i'm looking for inspiration and ironically 'connection' while I was deliberately disconnecting myself from the rest of my family sitting right next to me.

This got me thinking, how easy it is to be always on, it has infiltrated our lives so strongly that a smartphone is now beyond a choice, It is amazing technology and benefits so many people, but how do create forced breaks?

In a world that is either over connected or disconnected due to technology, practicing Jiu-Jitsu can bring about several social benefits. Here are some ways in which Jiu-Jitsu can positively impact individuals and communities:

  1. Physical and mental well-being: Jiu-Jitsu is a physically demanding martial art that promotes overall fitness and well-being. Engaging in regular training sessions can improve strength, endurance, flexibility, and cardiovascular health. This physical activity helps combat sedentary lifestyles associated with excessive technology use, promoting healthier individuals.

  2. Face-to-face interactions: In an era where much of our communication occurs online, Jiu-Jitsu provides a platform for face-to-face interactions and social engagement. Training sessions involve working closely with training partners, fostering camaraderie and building real-world connections. This direct human interaction helps counter the isolation that can result from excessive reliance on technology.

  3. Sense of community: Jiu-Jitsu academies often cultivate a strong sense of community among practitioners. Students come from diverse backgrounds and form a supportive network where everyone works together to improve their skills. This community-oriented environment encourages social interactions, collaboration, and the development of long-lasting friendships.

  4. Mutual respect and discipline: Jiu-Jitsu promotes values such as respect, discipline, and humility. Practitioners learn to treat their training partners with respect, regardless of their age, gender, or skill level. This emphasis on respect carries over into other aspects of life, fostering positive social interactions and relationships beyond the training mat.

  5. Conflict resolution and self-control: Jiu-Jitsu training involves controlled sparring sessions where practitioners learn how to handle conflict in a respectful and controlled manner. Through the practice of techniques and strategies, individuals develop self-control, patience, and the ability to diffuse potentially volatile situations. These skills can extend beyond the training environment, helping practitioners manage conflicts and communicate effectively in their personal and professional lives.

  6. Cultural exchange and diversity: Jiu-Jitsu has a global presence, with practitioners from various cultures and backgrounds. Engaging in Jiu-Jitsu exposes individuals to different perspectives, cultures, and traditions. This cultural exchange fosters understanding, empathy, and appreciation for diversity, promoting a more inclusive and tolerant society.

Overall, Jiu-Jitsu offers a valuable counterbalance to the effects of overconnectedness or disconnection caused by technology. By promoting physical and mental well-being, facilitating face-to-face interactions, fostering a sense of community, instilling values like respect and discipline, teaching conflict resolution, and encouraging cultural exchange, Jiu-Jitsu can contribute to a healthier and more socially connected world.
